WOAH!

Wo-ah-Wo-ha!

Category Archives: Tips

Accordingly to Huffington Post our New Year´s resolutions will fail due to the lack of energy, and this is common sense. It is all about discipline and consistency in the long run. And I am lacking both, but amazingly enough after two months travelling the US, and embracing Nature like a wild child, I do have massive storage of energy. Maybe the wise thing to do will be making DISCIPLINE and CONSISTENCY achieving, your main 2012 goals. But they are nonsense, unless there is a powerful reason behind them. But if we visualize it…we will actually get to the subconscious real goal…what a nice way to trick yourself.

i.e

I will have the discipline to go to the gym—-You go to the gym, and you get proper fit.

Cross out every day you beat procrastination on the calendar, for the sake of discipline. Day by day, instead visualizing your fab self on a bikini in Southern India. Easy.

I will have the consistency to go to German classes—-You learn German, and you make your life easier in Berlin.

Good ideas to find out how to achieve all these things…still, it´s all common sense in the end, but never the less we all need to be reminded. However I really enjoy reading Celes. She´s a star.

Also on these first weeks of flying back home to Berlin, hip Neukolln moving, and getting rid of jet lag thanks to Melatonin (kids don´t do sleeping pills they are bad, drugs, DRUGS) I have been thinking about personal financial planning and the things I will do this year. Also biz planning for my third enterprise so far, after a mild successful fashion label in the late 90s at the age of 18(where were all of you, fashion bloggers? where were you Tavi, probs not born ouch :-/ age again) and a graphic design studio. And I discovered the wonder and phenomenon that is Danielle la Porte (is there something in the BC air that breeds really special people…what is it with you?) please read all she has to say about money and biz and actually…read all of it.

I have also been thinking about the type of biz. I truly would like to embrace. I mean don´t get me wrong, I love being a tour guide is a lot of fun, and specially if I can make ludotours, meaning playful tours. But still is not my final call, it´s just a mean for the time being, that makes me really happy and allows me a lot of space to grow in many fields. Aside from the fact that am a nerd and love History, and German History, and pimping the nazis, has to give you loads of good karma. Right?

This is how my year is starting…very full throttle. I would like to work more, write more and read more. And why not, start  a different blog, my misspelled woah! is a treasure box, but it´s too static and random.

Loads of love and inspiration.

Ahhh it´s always so easy on paper.

The year of Bruce Lee…and I welcomed it in Seattle, where his and his son Brandon gravesite are to be found. On a more delightful and playful mood, here it is how the next year will be.

2012: What will happen.

JANUARY: Someone named Theresa will have my glasses on the 1st day of the year, I will get them back on the 2nd. Will watch The Godfather and think about moving to a lil village in Sicily. I will fly back to Berlin, instead, with no delays, and even if I get stuck in London I won´t be able to see Pec, because she will be working and BA will make me fly in the afternoon. Also I won´t be able to see Cruz as she would still be in Madrid. Will go to Henry Rollins gig with my mate Sam. Will join a Crossfit gym or start long distance running, altogether with Power Yoga and Chi Kung with my friend Pablo. And I will stick to it. Stalk the fancy people at Berlin fashion week. Specially heterosexual men.

FEBRUARY: One month no smoke.Think to go back to fashion biz, and discard it. I will be working my ass off, for petty coins, it will be freezing and snow will break in. The Bright Tradeshow won´t send me the press pass, and I would tell their corporate asses to stay away from the true spirit of skateboarding and all boarding sports: FREEDOM you fools. I will be single yet again in St. Valentine´s day but getting lots of good sex.  I will tour with Pec, or at least I will be in London. I can write now…oh no hold it, that´s an illusion.

MARCH: Biz takes off. Like seriously. Find a nice, cheap apartment in Moabit or Treptower Park, because I can´t live with the NK hip anymore, and I need nature. Although I might reconsider it and stay close to my friends in da hood.  We will jump into Spring, the season most hated. I will be allergic starting next month and single. Will wish to go to Japan, to say goodbye to friend Aitana, but I will be working my ass off and poor. Fidel Castro dies. The end of an era. Tresca´s birthday.

APRIL:  I will be on B2 of Deutsch, and able to have a decent conversation. At least. Or talk nonsense with a nice accent. I will be making millions. And writing a lot. Will be almost fit, back to a normal 125 pounds and eating good. I might get a boyfriend, just for the sake of having a boyfriend. Wait no, I have no time. My mother´s birthday.

MAY: Go to London, to be amazed by this in case i can´t make it to ATP. Buy a rodie to run with friends Sam and Marta. Enjoy two days of sun for the first time since arrival. Get amazingly cured from allergy, and enjoy Spring. Ha. I will buy my ticket to India. Go somewhere to surf and chill.

JUNE: Will go to Ibiza to pay a quick visit to my parents and my dog, chill at the beach and smoke weed…NO wait…this is my 5th month no smoking…anything. Crack included. Will get my hair cut at my favourite hairstylist in San Antoni, a Scottish sexy man.Second time I will cut my hair in the year, probably last. On my way there, a  quick stop in Madrid to see friends, meet Tresca´s daughter, Molly than by then will be sleep trained and actually walking. She will probably hold a MBA in Business, as well.

JULY: We will have two days of summer, and everyone in Berlin will run to the lakes. Will go to the Berlin Fashion Week, and maybe bump into Angelica. I will get a smartphone, because it is about time. Will have lots of work and make lots of money. New twist in the occupying movement, now revolution is coming late fall, right before the World ends. We will have a Green November instead of a Red October.

AUGUST : Will work even more, write even more, and ride a whole lot more. Will go to my brother´s wedding in India, and celebrate my 32 years of age with friends and family in southern India. I will celebrate in Chennai my brother´s wedding, and will cry a lot, dance a lot and hug people a lot. Hang out with friends and family. Feel much love.

SEPTEMBER: Travel to Kerala, to stay in an ashram for a month. Get my first yoga teacher training. Write a lot.

OCTOBER: Meet up with my friend Rodrigo in Nepal, to trek the Himalayas. Will stay there for a while, and meet interesting people, in the amazing land. One week volunteer in Lhasa. Revolution is coming.

NOVEMBER: We are taking the streets, and there is a global change a conscious change. Will most likely move to Malaysia or India, on a new job position. Book publishing deal. Get married, because some say the end of the World is near. And I will rethink my position and actually get married.

DECEMBER: Will spend Christmas with my family for the first time in two years. …….

So that´s it. Read also this  post about how to face the New Year.

Loads of love and aspirations.

Last year my friend Matthews, formerly doing his PhD in physics and someone I truly admire and love, told me about mind maps, and how he used them to study and take notes. I found it fascinating, but never had the opportunity to use it, since I didn’t have anything to study.Or so I thought. Although I was actually studying German on my own, but really didn’t know how to use it with a language, seemed a bit too abstract to break down in a mental map, here is the video. Right now am studying German History, for the gazillionth time in my life, and therefore am starting my mind map challenge. And studying is never been so fun. But it can actually be used to planning a trip, organizing your “to do list”. It reminds me of this comics I used to make to study Philosophy in High School, only more effective. It is about maximizing your resources, by minimizing your time expenditure.

Here is a little How to guide I have found  in the internets:

The Mind Map® is an expression of Radiant Thinking and is therefore a natural function of the human mind. It is a powerful graphic technique which provides a universal key to unlocking the potential of the brain. The Mind Map can be applied to every aspect of life where improved learning and clearer thinking will enhance human performance. The Mind Map has four essential characteristics:

  • The subject of attention is crystallised in a central image.
  • The main themes of the subject radiate from the central image on branches.
  • Branches hold a key image/word printed on the associated line – details radiate out.
  • The branches form a connected nodal structure.

How to Make a Mind Map®

The ‘Laws of Mind Mapping’ were originally devised by Tony Buzan when he codified the use of imagery, colour and association and coined the phrase ‘Mind Mapping’. In the intervening 30 plus years, there have been many variations on the original ‘Mind Map ‘ and the widespread usage of mapping software of various sorts, has dramatically changed what is possible.

The summary below is based on Buzan’s structure (a ‘Mind Mapping, how to’ – details available in his many books) but we believe that whilst this structure is great for establishing well structured maps that can be used in many different ways, variations on these rules or ‘laws’ are often sensible and appropriate – as long as they are based on an understanding of why the laws exist and what they are trying to help the mind mapper to achieve.

A Mind Map showing 'How to Make a Mind Map'

The Mind Map above was produced using iMindMap.

1. Take a blank piece of paper, A4 or larger. Blank paper allows 360º of freedom to express the full range of your cortical skills, whereas pre-drawn lines restrict the natural flow of your thoughts.
2. Use the paper in landscape orientation. Words and images have more space in the direction we write, so they don’t bump into margins as quickly.
3. Start in the centre. Thoughts start in the centre of our mental world. The Mind Map page reflects this!
4. Make a central image that represents the topic about which you are writing/thinking:

  • Use at least three colours.
  • Keep the height and width of the central image to approx. 2’’ or 5 cm (proportionately larger for bigger paper).
  • Allow the image to create its own shape (do not use a frame).
A picture is worth a thousand words. It opens up associations, focuses the thoughts, is
fun and results in better recall:

  • Colours stimulate the right cortical activity of imagination as well as capturing and holding attention.
  • This size gives plenty of space for the rest of your Mind Map, while making it large enough to be the clear focus of the topic.
  • The unique shape makes it more memorable and enjoyable. A frame makes the centre a monotony of shape and disconnects the branches.
5. The main themes around the central image are like the chapter headings of a book:

  • Print this word in CAPITALS or draw an image.
  • Place on a line of the same length
  • The central lines are thick, curved and organic i.e. like your arm joining your body, or the branch of a tree to the trunk.

The branch of a Mind Map

  • Connect directly to the central image.
The main themes, connected to the central image on the main branches, allow their relative importance to be seen. These are the Basic Ordering Ideas (BOIs) and aggregate and focus the rest of the Mind Map:

  • Printing (versus cursive) allows the brain to photograph the image thus giving easier reading and more immediate recall.
  • Word length equals line length. An extra line disconnects thoughts, length accentuates the connection.
  • Curved lines give visual rhythm and variety and so are easier to remember, more pleasant to draw and less boring to look at. Thicker central lines show relative importance.
  • Connected to the image because the brain works by association not separated, disconnected lines.
6. Start to add a second level of thought. These words or images are linked to the main branch that triggered them. Remember:

  • Connecting lines are thinner.
  • Words are still printed but may be lower case.
Your initial words and images stimulate associations. Attach whatever word or image is triggered. Allow the random movement of your thought; you do not have to ‘finish’ one branch before moving on:

  • Connected lines create relationships and a structure. They also demonstrate the level of importance, as from a branch to a twig.
  • The size and style of the letters provide additional data about the importance and meaning of the word/image.
7. Add a third or fourth level of data as thoughts come to you:

  • Use images as much as you can, instead of, or in addition to the words.
  • Allow your thoughts to come freely, meaning you ‘jump about’ the Mind Map as the links and associations occur to you.
Your brain is like a multi-handed thought-ball catcher. The Mind Map allows you to catch and keep whatever ‘thought ball’ is thrown by your brain.
8. Add a new dimension to your Mind Map. Boxes add depth around the word or image. To make some important points stand out.
9. Sometimes enclose branches of a Mind Map with outlines in colour:

  • Enclose the shape of the branch and hug the shape tightly.
  • Use different colours and styles.
The outlines will create unique shapes as you find in clouds and will aid your memory:

  • These provide immediate visual linking. They can also encourage follow-up and remind you of action you need to take.
  • They can also show connection between branches by using the same colour outline.
10. Make each Mind Map a little more:

  • BEAUTIFUL
  • ARTISTIC
  • COLOURFUL
  • IMAGINATIVE
    and
  • DIMENSIONAL
Your eyes and brain will be attracted to your Mind Map:

  • It will be easier to remember.
  • It will be more attractive to you
    (and to others as well).
11. Have fun!Add a little humour, exaggeration or absurdity wherever you can. Your brain will delight in getting the maximum use and enjoyment from this process and will therefore learn faster, recall more effectively and think more clearly.

Missing the days when I was able to get my rear end off bed at 5:30AM, dragged my feet to school and made it to get the school bus to Industry Hills, for a one hour voluntary swim practice at 7AM, aside from the one mandatory hour we had as members of the Sierra League pentachampion swim team, everyday after classes. I just found out, demolition of IHAC took place last March. We´ll always have Mt. SAC

Either way, I have always had hard feelings for swimming, ever since I got kicked out from the Olympic School for being a midget, at the tender age of 11. Next thing you get, is preteen angst and compulsive readings of Sartre.

This dazzling, talented, humorous, truthful, complex in its simplicity, wonderfully written self centered piece of BS I wrote as an intro, serves the purpose of the today topic: Self discipline. All I needed to know about discipline, I learnt it from sports. And never was a jock, but a punk.

Of course according to my always preposterous thinking procedures, it occurs to me that there are several types/degrees of self-discipline. In no specific order.

  • Superhero type: So you have a fever so high to warm all the lovely little bankrupt homes of Iceland on its own…and what do you do? you go lifting weights double your size and sweat off the sickness for an hour at the gym. That is, undoubtedly, what anyone about to experience a nuclear fission on his/her forehead would do. For the longest time, I used to call this “to pull a Hughsie”. Now this superhero subject, can pull that hard training madness, and achieve much more beyond our imagination and ambition; from a basic diet of bread and butter, to a fitness empire. And that to me, is nothing but superhero self-discipline. So cheers to that. You all superheroes out there, have all my admiration and blessings. No doubt.
  • The multitalented creative entrepreneur: Now, this is the type of selfdiscipline that preaches to ” i really feel like doing this shit” and never takes a stand back…leaving the sorry asses of “i-wishes” behind, for it makes us happy, nevermind the efforts, setbacks and ignorant jealousy. You find this subjects playing in a band, coming up with underground low-budget record companies, presenting the finest gigs and venues in town without being pretentious…and still manage to have an 8 hours regular job in the corp. world.
  • The erudite : The ones that forgive a parrrteeey just to go on study nonsense languages, far out of reach for the lazy, undisciplined knobs. Buried in knowledge of books, classes, seminars…on an everlearning-always-studying route, that only few are able to take. Uni is the home of the braves.
  • The basic self-discipline: The one that almost automatically makes you have all your meals (make one raw, if so), go to work, do your jogging and sports training 3 times a week, read/write/draw a little…and answer all your social commitments. Personally, am stuck in this one, with traces of the previous ones…tiny traces.

It does not get better than this, I have high fever and therefore I have to go jogging in the icy rain.

Loads of love and discipline.
